Myth:  Kidney stone surgery leads to recurrence of stones

Fact:
  • The recurrence of kidney stones is not related to its surgical removal. Worldwide studies have proved that if a person had a kidney stone before, the lifetime chances of him having it again is 50 %. The kidneys develop the tendency to form stones again and again.
  • Factors that contribute to the recurrence of kidney stones are inadequate water intake, excess animal protein intake, excess salt intake, abnormalities in the metabolic functions of the kidney, structural variations in the kidney, obesity, diabetes, lack of physical exercise, etc.
  • Thus, recurrence is nowhere related to previous stone surgery; whether u remove the stone by surgery or it comes out with medicines the risk for recurrence will be the same.
  • Don’t delay your treatment under this misconception. Timely and appropriate management of kidney stones is the only way to protect your kidneys.
