Myth Debunked: Milk and Kidney Stones - Dr. Parag Gulhane
Myth :
Avoid milk or milk products if suffering from kidney stones
Facts :
Stopping dairy products to prevent kidney stones will cause more harm than benefit.
Milk and milk products are an important source of calcium. Calcium is an essential element for our body and plays a crucial role in heart function, muscle function, and many metabolic activities. Also, dietary calcium combines with oxalate and prevents its absorption in the intestine. Oxalate is the main culprit in the formation of calcium oxalate stones. But excess of calcium particularly in supplementary forms poses a significant risk for recurrent stone formers. Approximately 1 gm of calcium is recommended daily. Thus low and excess dietary calcium can both result in stone formation, hence roughly 300 to 400 ml of milk or milk products per day is safe.
