Dr. Parag Gulhane, MBBS, MS, DNB Urology, of Dr. Gulhane’s Urology & Dental Clinic in Hadapsar, Pune, shared expert advice in an article published by ABP News Live on Doctor's Day. Emphasizing kidney health, Dr. Gulhane recommends adequate water intake of 3-4 liters per day and reducing salt intake to less than 1.5 grams per day. He advises limiting animal fat, opting for low-fat dairy, and avoiding preserved and packed foods. Consuming whole grains such as wheat, brown rice, oats, and corn is beneficial, along with choosing foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars. Eating whole fruits rather than juices, limiting alcohol, and quitting smoking are crucial steps. Dr. Gulhane also highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy weight (BMI 20-22), getting 7-8 hours of sleep, exercising 30 minutes daily, and controlling diabetes, blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Regular urine and blood tests every six months or as advised by a physician, along with practicing yoga or meditation, are essential for overall kidney health.
